The Lead Pastor

Charlene Hill is the Senior Pastor of Good News Community Church United Church of Christ located in Rogers Parks, Chicago, IL.  She was called to GNCC, located in Rogers Park, a gorgeous and diverse neighborhood on the far northeast side of Chicago.  Pastor Charlene was called to GNCC, a multicultural and intergenerational congregation, in 2007 and is amazed at how fast time in ministry has passed.  As the daughter of a military man her childhood years were equally divided between islands, urban areas, and rural America.  Pastor Charlene’s worship experience was also diverse including Baptist (childhood years), charismatic non-denominational, Mennonite, and now the United Church of Christ.  She appreciates the multitude of voices that inform her own spirituality.  Both of the trivia facts about her contribute to her passion for pastoring a church where variety and differences are celebrated as God’s creative artistry.

Prior to her appointment at Good News Community Church, Charlene served two years at Galewood Community UCC.  She served eight years at Bryn Mawr Community Church UCC.  Prior to her internship at Bryn Mawr Community Church that would lead to active ministry Pastor Charlene served for 5 years at Reba Place, a Mennonite church.  It was at Reba Place Church where  her grappling with theological questions led to seminary education.  At McCormick Theological Seminary, she was able to travel, meet, and explore with others the depth of her faith.  Her call to ministry was sealed.

As a part of her journey Pastor Charlene is bi-vocational and also finds meaning and passion in being a psychotherapist part-time.  She says, “Listening more and accompanying people on their journey toward wholeness is just about the best work one can do” next to journeying with the Good News faith community.  Both roles stretch her making her ever accountable to and aware of her purpose in life.

Pastor Charlene has pastored GNCC for  almost 7 years.  She has been ordained for 8 years.  She is a graduate of McCormick Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and University of Chicago (M.A.).  She is the proud author of  She is the proud parent of Josiah Hill, an alert and active four year old.  And she also enjoys spending time with family and friends.
